Craniosacral Therapy

The word “craniosacral” comes from the membrane system that surrounds the central nervous system and connects the cranium to the sacrum. This system provides nourishment, protection, pressure regulation, sensory feedback and more. Any occurrence that interferes with the membrane’s ability to accommodate the rhythmically fluctuating fluid pressures and volumes is a potential problem.

Using very gentle touch, craniosacral therapy’s objective is to find areas of restricted movement that compromise function and re-establish normal movement. By assisting the hydraulic forces in the craniosacral system and, in turn, improving central nervous system functioning, treatment facilitates the body’s innate, self-healing mechanisms.

Craniosacral therapy is an effective form of treatment for a wide range of illnesses helping to create the optimal conditions for health, encouraging vitality and facilitating a sense of well-being. It is suitable for people of all ages including babies, children and the elderly, and can be effective in acute or chronic cases.

What to expect in a treatment session:

During a Craniosacral therapy session which lasts from 45 minutes to an hour the client lies fully clothed on the massage table. From there, the practitioner uses a light touch to feel the rhythmic motion of the cerebrospinal fluid within the craniosacral system. They check the rate, amplitude, symmetry, and quality of this wave-like motion in places where the craniosacral membrane barrier attaches to bones such as the skull, sacrum and tailbone. Any restrictions or blockages are treated with light-touch adjustments. By assisting the hydraulic forces in the craniosacral system and, in turn, improving central nervous system functioning, treatment facilitates the body’s innate, self-healing mechanisms.
